Creating a Purposeful Vision in Internet Marketing

In this article I will try to apply Andy Stanley’s principles to internet marketing to find new success and satisfaction in creating new campaigns and blogs for myself, clients and affiliate products.  These are just my ideas based on my experience with Andy Stanley’s message on visioneering. I hope to hear how you create a purposeful vision in your internet marketing.

Visioneering

Living with purpose, being purposeful about where you end up is how we should start any journey. Everyone will end up somewhere in life, why not end up somewhere on purpose.

Vision is a mental picture of what could be, it is a preferred future or destination. Vision begins as a burden for what could be — we do what we do because of a burden for the way things should be. Great vision will only be successful if there is passion that this preferred future should be.

Andy Stanley provides these 5 principles for your vision by detailing the story of Nehemiah, from the Bible, in his book Visioneering and in a speaking series titled ‘Making Vision Stick’.

State it simply
- Boil it down to an irreducible minimum, make it simple, portable and memorable.
- Andy’s church Northpoint has a vision “to create a church that unchurched people love to attend.”
Cast it convincingly
- Define the problem
- Offer a solution
- Explain why and why now.
Repeat it regularly
- Avoid leaks due to laziness and busyness. Avoid confusion and keep the vision fresh for all involved.
- Fit it into the regular activities of your family or organization.
Celebrate it systematically
- When the vision is embodied in an event or person celebrate it. Use the story to underscore the vision.
Embrace it personally and publicly
- Build credibility. Do what you are asking others to do.

Finding Your Vision for Internet Marketing

In your internet marketing efforts whether for your own small business, a client company or perhaps just your personal blog vision and purpose are key.

Simple Vision Statement

Consider writing out your vision in simple terms and posting it on a bulletin board or a sticky note on your monitor. This isn’t something that needs to be written out on pages. Consider twitter as your vision restriction. Your vision should be simply stated in 140 characters or less. Now that will make it easier to later use your vision statement in your tweets, Facebook status, blog taglines and more.

Convincing Others and Yourself

At some point, likely on a regular basis you are going to want to cast your vision. In internet marketing and leadership vision is about the preferred future. You shouldn’t have to struggle to convince others that your idea for the future is the right path. Rather it should be clear to you how to describe the problem and how your vision offers the solution. Don’t forget in internet marketing the why and why now is critically important. You have only fractions of seconds to convince people to click one link further or to purchase a product or to simply follow you.

Rinse and Repeat Internet Marketing

Vision and purpose to your life and your internet marketing efforts requires diligence. Avoid laziness and procrastination. Each time you post something, a blog post, a tweet, a photo, or comment, consider tying it back to your vision statement. This is not easy. After weeks it can get harder to see how to not sound repetitive. But consider this your goal so that whenever a new reader or customer lands on the page they won’t miss out on your vision.

Build on Success

When your vision is represented in your employees, team, readers or you see it in other events don’t hesitate to draw attention to how this reinforces your vision statement. If you can regularly tie in current success with your preferred future and your proposed solution then likely you will create something that is viral and can be shared. Every internet marketers dream is to create a message that is retweeted and spread around the world.

Live Your Message

Your vision should not differ from your actions. If it does it is likely a misguided or contrived vision that others will eventually learn to be something to avoid. Instead be all about your vision. With purpose make sure your writing, reading, speaking and actions all demonstrate the vision set forth. This is where trust and credibility are formed. Don’t be phony with your message otherwise your followers will surely find out.

I’m a huge fan of the simple vision statement. If you put it in writing and look at it everyday, you’ll find a way to make it happen.
