I have been trying to read more about SEO and the various page rank and keyword optimization techniques to help your website rank higher. An interesting video clip I came across today reinforced a theory I already had regarding tags and categories. Every time you work on a blog you have to decided whether to use tags or categories to break down your content. You could choose to use neither or both as well.
On most of my blogs, including our new Lake of the Ozarks website, I use both categories and tags. On the Lake of the Ozarks site we are using the categories to break apart sections. Think of it as a newspaper with each individual section. Some readers might not care to read about Lake of the Ozarks Vacation information but they do want to quickly find the section on the lake dining options. The tags then draw out the topics of each post and possibly additional keywords that can help in tag clouds or in finding related posts. With the new site thelakeoftheozarks.net we are trying to keep the tags limited and simply use the keywords in the posts. The website is still new so we will have to give it some time to see how this fairs for this particular website.
Matt Cutts talks about the importance of tags and categories on blogs. Keep categories specific and do not go overboard with tags.
